The most common 1000 words of English

Your first aim should be to learn the first 1000 most common words of English. This list was developed by Paul Nation at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. To begin with, 1000 words may not sound like a lot. In fact, it is not a lot. However, this carefully selected list of words allows you to say all sorts of things over a range of subjects. Your reading ability will also improve.

I have spent considerable teaching time using these lists and have found them to be very effective. Combined with the 1000 word texts, they offer a finite learnable system. However, I have found that some words are inappropriate for second language learners (both ESL and EFL) and so I have altered them slighlty. My lists are 90% compatible with the originals. All I have done is swap a few words between the 1000 and 2000 lists. For example, I don't think a beginner needs the word distinguish. Also,I deleted a few. Further, when I find words in the 1000 reading materials that are not in the 1000 list I change either the text or the lists to make it match. I emailed Paul Nation directly and he advised that I could alter the lists anyway that I found suitable. Click here for my First 1000 Word List.

The first 1000 words will give a beginner what they need to get on in daily life. If you wish to study more then move on to the 2000 word list. Click here for the Second 1000 Word List. If you search, you will probably be able to find a 3000 word list but it is not really necessary. Once you can read the 2000 most common words you should be able to start reading most children's books. And that is just what you should do. Once you start reading you will reinforce what you have already learned ten times over, and as you continue to read so your vocabulary will steadily increase in a completley natural way.

If you search the internet you will find various texts that only use the first 1000 words. I have included some here - just click on the texts to the left. They have been written using the first 1000 words. I found them on the internet here and they were made by Victoria University of Wellington, NZ. I have more and will upload them later. I am also developing some texts based on the 2000 word list, though this will take a little longer. They are mostly simplified news articles across a range of subjects that students typically find interesting.
